The National Fleece Show 2014

(Sponsored by British Alpaca Fleece Buyers)

The National Fleece Show was held, for the second year running, at CS Alpacas at Ford, Bucks on Tuesday 11th March this year.  The day started out as usual, freezing cold and miserable.  However, this did not deter the judges’ enthusiasm for what lay ahead.  With 130 fleeces to get through in a day, Mary-Jo Smith and Rob Bettinson started at 8.30am and worked solidly until 6pm at night.  Mary-Jo was judging the suris, fawn and light huacayas and Rob started with the greys, then the blacks, browns and ended on the whites.

The standard of the fleeces at the top end was extremely high, with just half a point splitting 1st, 2nd and 3rd in quite a few classes.

20140311_161520   The huacaya supreme champion was won by Houghton Damien, with 92 points.  This was an amazing fleece to see laid out on the table – it took your breath away!  At the weekend, the same animal went on to become supreme champion at the National Halter Show!  What a pity Mick and Liz George have sold it to Norway!

The suri supreme champion, Alpaca Stud Commander, was also an extremely impressive fleece being awarded 86.5 points, so congratulations to Nick Harrington-Smith and John Potts.

It was also great to see so many suri fleece entries this year, compared to last year, so thank you to all exhibitors who entered and please continue to do so in the future, as it is a privilege to see such lovely fleeces, both huacaya and suri, all under one roof.

The helpers for the day, Sue Ashmole, Linda and Paul Bywater, Alison Boyden, Shirley Isseyegh, Lulu Oliver and Carol Royale, were absolute champions, making sure that the judges did not have time to slow down, with the next fleece being on the table ready to be judged the minute the judge had finished the previous one.  As well as working extremely hard all day, they gained a wealth of knowledge from the judges, so a good day was had by all.  When 6 o’clock came there were a lot of very tired but happy people at Ford.  Well done all of you!
